| Revel in Chemistry (Part 1) (go to Part 2) --Enjoy the Fireworks Everything on Oprah Winfrey’s show flows--the talk, the tears, and for many screaming audience members, the terrific gifts. In comparison, everything on Jerry Springer’s show flies--the four- letter words, the fists and on some brilliant episodes, the furniture. Many people think that Oprah is about communication breakthrough; Jerry, about communication breakdown. That’s not the case at all. The difference between the two shows lies in the willingness of their respective guests to make the choices to improve their lives. While most of us will never be talk show hosts who reach audiences of millions every day, each of us does reach a daily audience. If you’re really intent on having a better life with these people, ask yourself if you really care. About your family member. Your friend. The people at work. The people at your place of worship. In your civic organization. The people that you pass on the street. The people on this planet. It doesn't matter where they are. It matters where you are. One of my favorite stories as a kid was E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. The older I get, the more and more I appreciate its humor, symbolism and wisdom. It’s a story that understood all the lessons we’ve been talking about. All it takes is one little spider willing to care about one little pig to start building up a solid friendship. Charlotte’s Web illustrated that once the first strand is thrown, good communication is a web that can electrify an entire world and save lives in the process. You can’t worry what others will say or think. You can only believe in the power of your own good efforts to envelop others. The more conscious you become of how you’re communicating, the better chance you have of building good relationships. You’ll grow aware that the better you communicate with family, friends and colleagues, the better you'll start relating to people outside of our immediate groups. A world singing in harmony must be an attainable goal. So until we all die and go to a better place, why can't we make this place a better place? The time to revel in life is now. What do I do when I achieve my goals? |
